Settings that work when logged in as one user account are not found when logged in as a different user

Robo-FTP uses two types of settings:

  • System-wide settings (sometimes called All Users settings)
  • Individual user settings (sometimes called Current User settings)

If you create settings when running the Robo-FTP Configurator as an Administrator (specifically, a user that has write permissions on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry key), those settings are stored as system-wide settings. These settings will be available to any users on the system, although only an Administrator can modify those settings.

If you create settings when running the Robo-FTP Configurator as any user other than an Administrator (as defined above), those settings are stored in the profile of that user and are not accessible to any other users on the system.

If you are able to access a particular setting (such as a stored passphrase or a managed site) when logged in as one user but not when logged in as a different user, the most likely explanation is that the setting was created and stored in the first user's profile and is therefore not accessible to the second user.

There are two ways to address such a problem:

  • Run Robo-FTP as Administrator and store the setting, thus ensuring it will be available to all users
  • Store the setting when logged in as the user that will run Robo-FTP and repeat that process for each user that will need access to that setting.

For users of Robo-FTP 3.9.x

When you start the Robo-FTP Configurator without Administrator privileges, the Configurator will pop up a dialog asking if you want to configure settings for the current user or system wide.

If you have previously created a setting in your current user profile, and you now want that setting to be available system wide, you should do the following:

  • Launch the Configurator, choose the option to edit settings for current user, delete the relevant setting, and exit the Configurator
  • Launch the Configurator, choose the option to edit settings system wide, re-create the relevant setting, and exit the Configurator

For users of Robo-FTP 3.10.x and later

When you start the Robo-FTP Configurator without Administrator privileges, the Configurator will pop up a dialog asking if you want to configure settings for the current user or system wide.

When you choose the option for editing system wide settings in Robo-FTP 3.10, the Configurator displays the system wide settings merged with settings stored in the currently logged in user's settings.

If you have previously created a setting in your current user profile, and you now want that setting to be available system wide, you should do the following:

  • Launch the Configurator
  • Choose the option to edit settings system wide
  • Navigate to the section of the Configurator with the relevant setting
  • Open that setting and click OK to save the setting

When the setting is saved under these conditions, it will be moved to the system wide configuration.
